Today we celebrate the International Day of Africa, «Commemoration of the founding of the Organisation of African Unity, a regional organization bringing together the countries of the African continent.
Founded May 25, 1963, a year after the dissolution of the African Union, its goal was to promote the unity and solidarity of African states and to serve as a collective voice for the continent. It was also dedicated to the eradication of colonialism and the promotion of international cooperation. »
May 25, 2019, seems relevant to us as the Afro descendant and Black population, encompassing all parents of children of African descent, from various European geographical points; to call for a channel of communication and solidarity for Human Rights, with particular attention to the Rights of Minors and their health.
It is in fact a continuation of the 2016 theme centered on “Human Rights, with special attention to Women’s Rights.”
We want to serve as whistleblowers to launch an information and awareness campaign on the toxic chemicals present in the hair product formulas, designed for the children’s market.
This violates the right of minors in the Union.
Several scientific studies show that their use is dangerous on growing bodies.
The European Cosmetics Directive states that all cosmetics sold in the EU must be safe, prohibiting the inclusion of carcinogenic substances, causing female reproductive toxicity and developmental toxicity. In the various studies, some products were found to contain substances prohibited by European legislation and regulation.
Therefore, these products can not be sold in Europe.
Another problem arises when these banned substances in accordance with the regulations do not appear on the product label, whereas they are prohibited by law, and should not be imported in the first place, let alone applied on children.

Some substantial examples:
Skin and eyes irritation and contact dermatitis are linked to shampoos, conditioners, hair dyes, permanent wave solutions, flat iron sprays.
Obesogens are hormone disruptors altering the metabolism. They affect foetuses and early exposure in life, will have a long-lasting effect on metabolism and body cells. They are also linked to type 2 diabetes.
These disrupters can be found in shampoos, conditioners, detanglers, hair lotions and fragrances.
Development of the reproductive system, underage girls using chemical hair oils and perms will be more likely to experience early puberty, including premature menstruation.
Children using detanglers, conditioners containing animal placenta, as little as 2 years old, started showing signs of puberty.
Other important points to highlight from these various studies:
· All products tested contained chemical fragrances.
· 78% contained parabens.
· 72% of products contained parabens and diethyl phthalate.
· 84% of the detected chemicals are not on the product label.
· 11 products contained 7 chemicals banned in the European Union.
Hair straighteners marketed for children contained the highest levels of 5 banned chemicals in the EU.
· Parabens, perfumes, nonylphenols, and diethyl phthalate are commonly found in growth/root stimulators, in hair lotions and relaxers.
· Cyclosiloxanes were detected more frequently in anti-frizz products with the highest concentrations of any measured chemical.
