Dunia Hedreville was born in Paris. Her father was a saxophonist of Zouk and traditional music, native to Guadeloupe of the French Antilles. “My father was from Guadeloupe and my mother Spanish from León. I am mixed race, from nowhere and everywhere.”
After a childhood spent between France, the Caribbean and Spain, she settled in Mallorca where she perfected her vocal technique.
She debuted with a multitude of projects in different groups and musical formations, singing Jazz and Swing, demonstrating her versatility inspired by her admiration and unconditional love for African American divas, she considered teachers and goddesses.
Her musical evolution as an artist is a particular didactic path that has led her to discover herself, in her corporality as a woman, composing hymns, singing tributes to femininity as a sacred Deity.
This trajectory has been a self-affirmation of her identity as a mixed child from Africa and the Caribbean, connecting with the universality of the human soul.
In the early stages of her singing career, she has appropriated Jazz as a second skin, in search of her inner virtuosity. With Gospel she found her spiritual dimension that has taken her back to her origins to communicate with the sacred and ancestral voices of her African ancestors.
She is the cousin of the sister island of Martinique, land of my ancestors, of my childhood where a large part of my family and people reside. We are by circumstances living as an Afro Nomadic tribe, due to our lives circumstances, in a foreign land which we call home, mixed with European blood and intertwined with other destinies. In each one of her gesture, swing of the hip, facial expression and in the tonality of her voice, I see and feel a reflected image of the women of my family. More often than not, she isn’t aware of her own ancestral beauty, of her Caribbean attributes and characteristics; looking from her Afro Spaniard identity. But I perceive them and communicate myself through them every time we are together.
Dunia was a long lasting memory of what we were in different time and geographic point. Another bond that took me back in memories to my warm home, thanks to our akin familiarity and corporeality, having a music connection as centre stage for our interpersonal relation.
